The infant son of Capt. Frederick Benteen of 7th Cavalry fame, and his wife, the former Catherine Norman, baby Theodore was the last of the couple's five children. Born at Fort Rice, Dakota Territory, he had been predeceased by his three sisters--Caroline, Kate, and Fannie--all of whom had died in infancy. Sadly, it was a fate that he, too, would share. He was less than a year old when he died at the fort in the early winter of 1875-76. Survived by his grieving parents and his 2-year-old brother Fred, little Theodore was reportedly buried in the now-defunct Fort Rice Post Cemetery, where his infant sister Fannie had been interred 3 years earlier. The present location of their remains is not yet known to this contributor.
