The infant daughter of Capt. Frederick Benteen of 7th Cavalry fame, and his wife, the former Catherine Norman, "Baby Fan" was the 3rd of the couple's five children. Born in Nashville, TN, she had been predeceased by her two elder siblings, Caroline & Kate, both of whom had died in infancy. Little Fannie consequently lived her brief life as an only child. When she was 3 months old, her father was posted to Fort Rice, in the Dakota Territory. There she fell ill, and just before the onset of winter, died at the age of 8 months. Her father, who was in the field at the time, had been denied permission to see her before her death. Survived by her grieving parents, Fannie's siblings would include 2 brothers born after her passing: Fred & Theodore, but only Fred, who was born the following year, would survive infancy. Both Fannie and baby Theodore were reportedly buried in the Fort Rice Post Cemetery, now defunct. The present location of their remains is not yet known to this contributor.
