She had married first Herskz Sitarz in 1881 in Zaręby Kościelne, Ostrów Mazowiecka Co., Masovian Voivodeship, Poland. Sarah married Joe after the break-up with his first wife Leah - Sarah's sister - and the death of Joe's second wife Leja in 1883. Joe and Sarah were married shortly thereafter and in December 1885 the first of their six children was born.
