Richard Francis Cates was born in Hickory County, Missouri on January 29, 1846 to Dr. Richard Stanford Cates and Cornelia Jane Harvey Cates. He was one of a group of six siblings. Their names and birth order is as follows:

4. Robert W. Cates, b: 1843 d: 1924

Rev Cates married Miss Cornelia Isabella Wooten (1850-1876) in Llano County, Texas on December 17, 1868. Four children, one of which died in infancy, were born of their union. Cornelia died on February 22, 1976 giving birth to their fourth child, Wesley Wooten Cates. Her death at age 26 left the young a widower with three children under the age of six.
