The widowed Robert married Miss Mary Ruth Justus, 1854-1896, of Williamson County, Texas on March 22, 1876 in Burnet County, Texas. Mary Ruth was the daughter of Mary Ann Stradley and William T. Justus, formerly of Hendersonville, Henderson County, North Carolina. The ceremony which united the couple was performed by the groom's brother, Rev. Richard Francis Cates.

One child was born of this union.
