James Bell was born sometime between 1775 and 1777. Most likely his birth was in Washington County Virginia. He was the son of Samuel Bell and Sarah (Enoch). Sarah's surname is based on my Y-DNA that is closely shared with descendants of Benjamin Bell. Benjamin b. circa 1751 married a younger sibling to Sarah Enoch.

Samuel Bell died (1780) testate naming his wife Sarah and children, Hannah and James. Shortly after his death his three heirs removed to Kentucky. Funds from Samuel's estate were transferred to his two children by way of a Virginia treasury note for 1875 Kentucky Acres.

Hannah married Elijah Harbour in Lincoln County on 27 Sept 1787. James married Susannah Lewis in Madison County Kentucky on 24. Mar 1796. The two families moved together first to Wilson County Tennessee and then on to Rutherford County. James was the Secretary for the Brawley Fork Baptist Church when he and other members signed and witnessed a deed for the Church's church site, circa 1808. James and Elijah bought land in Rutherford County and Warren County that was situated on the East Fork of the Stones River. Acreages were about a mile apart, Bell's to the west of Elijah's land.

James also died testate. It was in Rutherford County Tennessee in 1828, the same year his will was written. He named his 11 children and Susannah Lewis Bell as his heirs. Later when Susannah and many of her children were preparing to move to Missouri the whole of Susannah's land (which when new boundaries were drawn for Rutherford County put it in Cannon County) was sold to Maxwell Chambers of Rowan County NC in 1842. The same land eventually was gifted (circa 1854) to a once Bell neighbor and who also was Chamber's cousin. In order for the land to transfer ownership all heirs had to go to their local county clerk's office and notarized their letter of approvals. Only missing signature was Elizabeth.

So the net of all of this is that there are wills, a treasury note, deeds, marriage certificates, and census enumerations that provide factual information on these 2 generations of Bells.
Samuel, father of Hannah and James Bell and husband of Sarah died in 1780 with only two children of record . In all of these documents I named there is no reference to any given name other than the ones mentioned above. James was James not James A or James Benson. Susannah Lewis was just Susannah (nee Lewis) Bell
