Jordan Payne was only 5 years old when he died. He was autistic and deaf, and could not talk. He unlocked the front door and slipped out of his great-grandmother's house in Pompano Beach, Florida very early in the morning of February 10, 2002 and wandered away. His body was found the next day in a canal. Jordan had drowned. Police arrested a 17-year-old boy, Gorman Roberts Jr., and charged him with murdering Jordan. Two witnesses, aged 9 and 10, said Roberts pushed Jordan into the canal and laughed as the child drowned. Roberts, who is developmentally disabled and has the mental age of a 10 or 11-year-old, said he accidentally knocked Jordan into the water while trying to break up a fight between three boys on the canal's bank. The witnesses gave many different stories about what they saw, sometimes blaming themselves for pushing Jordan. Because of the conflicting statements, prosecutors reduced Roberts's charge to manslaughter. He was tried as an adult and convicted in September 2002. In spite of his disabilities, Jordan loved people. He was always running up to people to say hi to them. All bio information and photo's are from the website Children Who Never Made It Home (http://www.free-webspace.biz/thevictims/ages.html).
