Louis Schmit was born February 4, 1846 in the Grand Duchy of Baden (now Baden-Wurtemburg, Germany). He arrived in New York City on March 30, 1868 and made his way to Detroit. A year later, on April 05, 1869, he married Regina Jehle. It is not known whether Louis and Regina knew each other before arriving in Detroit. However, Louis traveled to the US on the same ship as Regina's brother Fidel Jehle.
Regina supposedly also arrived in the US in 1868, but her name was not listed on the ship with Louis and Fidel. Louis, Regina and Fidel all originated in the Grand Duchy of Baden near the Switzerland border.
Louis and Regina made their home on the western outskirts of Detroit - in Springwells Township, in the village of Delray. They had 5 children:
Bertha - 1870
Louis - 1871
Augusta - 1873
Anna - 1875
Rosina - 1879
The Schmits were a devout Catholic family, and one of their granddaughters became a nun. Louis Schmit died at the age of 58 years of Cerebral Meningitis on June 18, 1904 in Delray.
