Melchior Kechely was born at Brachestadt, Bavaria, Germany, son of Johannes and Anna Barbara Schabert Kechele.(German spelling of the last name.) In 1857 the family came to America and located at Flat Rock, Ohio. Melchior learned the carpenters trade but at the age of 21 he volunteered his service in the Civil War. He enlisted in Co. H. of the 107 Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was at the battle of Gettysburg, Chancellorsville, Fort Wagner and many other great conflicts. After his discharge from the service he took up carpenter work and on January 1, 1867 he was united in marriage to Catharine Wilhelmina Koch, oldest daughter of Henrich and Catharina Detterman Koch. They were married at Tiffin, Ohio, and to this union 14 children were born. The parents with their first three children left Ohio in 1871 and moved to Gage County, Nebraska on a farm. There they farmed and raised their family and endured the hardships of pioneer days in Nebraska--drought, prairie fires, and Indians. Melchior was confirmed in the Lutheran Church while in Germany at the age of 12. He brought his confirmation Bible with him when he came to America. In 1914 Melchior, Catharine and the children still at home moved into the city of Odell, Gage County, Nebraska and in 1917 the couple celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary at their home. Melchior was a member of the Grand Army of Republic and attended several reunions with his company at Gettysburg.
