Was Nearly 88 Years Old and Had Been Blind Past Few Years -
Mrs. Gertrude G. (Lynde) Hunt, nearly 88, widow of Samuel Sibley Hunt, partner for many years in the former well-known firm of Smith & Hunt, died at 11 Wednesday forenoon at her home on Green Street, where she had lived 50 years. She had been in failing health for some time and for the past four and a half years had been totally blind. The funeral will be held at Rohde's funeral home on Oak street today at 2 o'clock.
Born in Guilford, Feb. 12, 1844, she was a daughter of Charles C. and Sarah (Smith) Lynde. She attended Powers Institute in Bernardston, Mass., and spent her early life in her native town. On March 19, 1881, she married in Worcester, Mass., Samuel Sibley Hunt, the ceremony being performed by Rev. M.H. Harris, formerly a pastor of the First Universalist church here. In 1881 when Smith & Hunt moved their headquarters from Guilford, to Brattleboro, Mr. and Mrs. Hunt moved to the house on Green street which has since been her home. Mr. Hunt died about 21 years ago.
Mrs. Hunt was a great lover of horses and formerly was an expert horsewoman. She was one of the first women riders in this section.
While living in Guilford she was church organist many years. She was one of the oldest members of Sedgwich Woman's Relief corps.
Mrs. Hunt's nearest surviving relatives are two cousins, Charles A. Smith of Brattleboro and Walter E. Hubbard of Gardner, Mass.
