Dr. Rank, Manitowoc Fair Secretary, Is Dead At 77

MANITOWOC—
Dr. Alex F. Rank, a member of the Manitowoc County fair board for 20 years and one of Wisconsin's oldest practicing veterinarians, died of a coronary attack at his home here Saturday night.

Dr. Rank, who had been a city supervisor on the Manitowoc County Board for 30 years had been hospitalized recently with a kidney ailment, but returned to his home several days ago.

As a representative of the Manitowoc First Ward originally, and for the past eight years of the Ninth Ward, Dr. Rank was “Mr. County Fair.” During his 20 years on the fair board, the past 15 years as secretary, he handled many phases of the annual display, including harness racing in which he was formerly superintendent of speed.

State Citation
He was also active for years on the County Board's public welfare committee. In January, 1959, he received a special citation from the Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Association for his 54 years of contribution to the profession. He had practiced in Manitowoc since graduation from the Chicago Veterinary Medical College in 1906.

A native of Manitowoc, he was born Sept. 2, 1883, a son of the late Andrew and Magdalene Gressel Rank. He was educated at St. Boniface Catholic School and the old First Ward High School before going to college. His wife, the former Catherine Cary, whom he married July 18, 1912, was director for many years of the Manitowoc City Public Welfare Department until her retirement about a year ago.

Funeral Tuesday
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two sons, Robert of Warsaw, Ind., and William, Madison; a daughter, Mrs. J.S. Donahue Jr., Dallas, Tex., and three grandchildren.

The requiem Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Andrew's Catholic Church, Manitowoc, with the Rev. Allen Walt, pastor, celebrant. Mass will follow 9:30 family rites at the Pfeffer Funeral Home, with burial in Calvary Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home this evening where the Rosary will be recited at 7:30.
