Alma moved with her family to Georgia during the depression, and graduated with five classmates from St. Mary's High School, where Alma participated in school plays and played forward on the school basketball team.
Alma married James Lester Larsen May 19, 1940, and they made their home in Fernandina Beach, Florida. Alma and Jim celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary this year.
During World War II, Alma worked at the Rayonier pulp mill in Florida as a millwright; and at a plant in Oakland, CA that manufactured crystals for walkie-talkies.
The Larsen family moved to Jesup, Georgia in the mid-fifties, and then to Sitka, Alaska in 1959 for Jim's work in the pulp & paper industry.
Alma was an avid golfer while living in Jesup, and a passionate salmon fisherman while residing in Sitka, winning trophies in both sports. She began painting at 56 years of age, and was an accomplished artist. Alma loved entertaining family and friends, and her wonderful southern cooking will be remembered by many.
After retiring, Alma and Jim traveled in their motor home for several years before settling in Burlington, WA in 1980, where they most recently attended Valley Community Church.
Alma became a Christian in her 20's, and continued to grow in her Christian faith. The following is one of her favorite passages of Scripture, found in both the Old and New Testaments: "Do not be afraid or terrified..., for the Lord your God goes with you, he will never leave or forsake you".
Alma was preceded in death by her parents; husband Jim (10/9/10); daughter Carol Gail; brother Robert Alford of Kingsland, GA; niece Pamela Odum and nephew Ricky Brazell both of Brunswick, GA.
She is survived by her children, son Robert Larsen (Mary) of Burlington, WA and daughter Janice Yates (Geoff) of Bellevue, WA; sisters, Doris Crosslen of Brunswick, GA and Irene Weller of Fernandina Beach, FL; grandchildren Erika Larsen of Oakland, CA; Jennifer Thorpe (Paul), and Deborah Riseborough, great-grandchildren Callum and Devon Thorpe and Arden and Theo Riseborough, all of Southampton, England; nephew Earl Brazell of Georgia; nieces Julie Ann Steffens and Rita Wilder, both of Florida; Teresa Davis of Tennessee, and many grand- and great grand- nieces and nephews.
A combined memorial service for Jim and Alma will be held at Valley Community Church, 705 E. Fairhaven Ave., Burlington, WA on December 4th at 11:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to Hospice of the Northwest, which provided loving care and support for Alma, James and the family.
