Mildred Leake Childrey died Monday night, October 7, 2013, at her home in Reidsville, North Carolina. Her loving husband, Sam, was by her side when she passed into eternal rest.

She was 87-years, 6 months old when she departed this earth.

A native of Heard County, Georgia, she was the biological daughter of Minnie (nee Rider) McDonald Mitchell and George Lewis McDonald and named Mildred Ophelia McDonald.

When she was a young girl, she was placed in an orphanage in Toccoa Falls, GA. There she was legally adopted by Bennie Franklin Leake and Lucy Taylor Leake Saunders of Reidsville, NC, and she took their last name. Mildred then moved to Reidsville and lived there for the remainder of her life. Although she once worked at the Reidsville plant of the American Tobacco Company, she left her job there to be a homemaker and spent the rest of her life looking after her husband and three sons.

She was an original member of the Christian Missionary Alliance Church of Reidsville (now known as the Reidsville Alliance Church).

Mildred loved people and she adored animals. One of her favorite hobbies was to play the piano and learned to play it by ear. She was also a fantastic cook and was known for her homemade biscuits and for always keeping the coffee handy. She also enjoyed the occasional family trip to Oak Island, NC, (formerly known as Long Beach).

Along with her biological and adoptive parents, she was preceded in death by her oldest son, Samuel Wayne Childrey, who died August 6th, 2010.

Mildred's survivors included her loving husband of 69 years, Samuel Thomas Childrey. She was also survived by her sons, Thomas Dwight Childrey and wife Janice; and Mark Lewis Childrey and partner Terrell Bowers, all of Reidsville. Two granddaughters, Deborah Childrey Little and Cassie Childrey Jobe. Two great-grandchildren, Katelyn Little and Devin Little of Reidsville. Daughter-in-law, Carol Underwood Childrey of Reidsville. And of course, her faithful buddy, Max, a dachshund adopted from the Danville Area Humane Society of Danville, VA.

Mildred is interred in the front section (block 3) of Greenview Cemetery on Montgomery Street in Reidsville. She is buried next to her husband Sam (who died April, 2nd, 2017) and just to the north of the Penn family mausoleum. A granite stone marks their resting place.
