Al Becker, age 89, of 1907 Hamilton St., Manitowoc, died early Tuesday morning, September 5, 1995, at St. Mary's Home, Manitowoc.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, September 8, 1995, at 12 Noon at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Manitowoc. Rev. Roman Zbieranski, O.F.M. will be celebrant with burial to follow at St. Mary's Cemetery. Military Graveside Rites will be accorded by VFW Otto Oas Post #659, Manitowoc.

Al was born October 25, 1905, in Manitowoc, son of the late John and Mary Budysz Becker. He attended St. Mary's Catholic Grade School, Manitowoc. On November 24, 1924, he enlisted in the United States Navy to begin his military career, which lasted more than 33 years. On May 22, 1929, he was married to Agnes Jankowski at St. Mary of Czestochowa Catholic Church, Milwaukee. For three years the couple made their home at Great Lakes Naval Training Center, Illinois. They then moved to California where they resided until Agnes's death on July 19, 1974. While serving in the Navy during World War II, Al was stationed at Tsing Tao, China and Yukuska, Japan, and also being part of the U.S. Naval Fleet that was bombed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Following the war Al was a naval recruiter at San Francisco and later moved to the San Diego Naval Base as a training supervisor. During the years with the Navy Al worked his way through the ranks and retired in 1957, with the rank of Lt. Commander.

Following his military duty he was employed for a short time at the Todd Shipyard, San Pedro, Calif., as a marine machinist. From 1957 until his retirement in 1971, he worked for the Atlantic Richfield Oil Company in Long Beach Calif. After Agnes's death in 1974, Al moved back to Manitowoc. On July 14, 1975, Al was married to Helen (Becker) Novak at St. John Catholic Church, Sherwood, Wis. The couple made their home in Manitowoc and spent as much time as they could at their summer home in Door County sharing it often with children, grandchildren and friends. Helen preceded him in death on March 24, 1989. Al was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Manitowoc.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald and Catherine Becker, Long Beach, Calif., Robert and Mary Becker, Garden Grove, Calif.; two daughters and one son-in-law, Sylvia and Clyde Hodges, Sheridan, Wyo., Carol Ordos, Seattle, Wash.; two stepsons and their wives, Richard and Shirley Novak, Wayne and Mary Novak, all of Sheboygan; one stepdaughter and her husband, Karen and Jan Tuesburg, Manitowoc; 18 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; four brothers and three sisters-in-law, Richard and Margaret Becker, Joseph and Lucille Becker, Chester Becker, Hiliary and Georgianna Becker, all of Manitowoc; three sisters, Blanche Neuser, Esther Bertler, and Sophie Bies, all of Manitowoc. Al was preceded in death by one son, John; two brothers; and three sisters.

Relatives and friends may call at St. Mary's Catholic Church Friday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service.

A memorial fund has been established in Al's name.

Reinbold-Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc, assisted the family with the funeral arrangements.
