Miriam C. Akers was born 4 December 1893, in Claremont, South Dakota, a daughter of the Rev. Edwin Wright and Anna Wilson Akers. She did her undergraduate work at MacMurray College and Illinois College in Jacksonville, Illinois. She received her master's degree from the University of Illinois and did archeological studies at the American School of Classical Studies in Athens, Greece. She was Professor of Languages at Illinois College, Denison University in Granville, Ohio, and the Inter-American University at San Germain, Puerto Rico. Over the course of her career, she taught Greek, Latin, and English. She was a member of the American Association of University Professors, the American Philological Society, and the American Institute of Archelogy. She died at the age of 76 in Hopedale, Illinois. Her brother, M.P. Akers, was killed in an automobile accident the same day. They were survived by three brothers. A joint memorial service was held at Annie Merner Chapel at MacMurray College with burial at Diamond Grove Cemetery. Her obituary appeared in the Jacksonville (IL) Courier, 28 May 1970.

Her brother, Milton P. "Pete" Akers, had learned of his sister Miriam's death at 4 a.m. (May 27) and was heading to Hopedale. He died in a head-on collision, about nine miles south of Hopedale on Rt. 121.

Funeral services for Mr. Akers and his sister, Miss Miriam C. Akers were held at Gilham-Buchanan Funeral Home in Jacksonville on Friday, May 29.
