September 9, 1936 - "John Sidney Bates, Holtsville's "grand old man," who recently celebrated his ninetieth birthday, was born in the house he now lives in on July 28, 1846. His father's name was William John Bates and his mother's name was Elizabeth Smith. His father died in a well cave-in when John Bates was a three-month-old baby and he was brought up by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. L'Hommedieu Smith, with whom he lived until they died. He later bought the home he now owns and married Susan Horncastle on May 19, 1869. Mr. and Mrs. Bates had three daughters, Jessie, Bessie and Maude. About 50 years ago Mr. and Mrs. Bates and their three daughters made the place he now lives in their permanent home. Their daughter, Jessie, married Clifford Squires and now lives in Colchester, Conn., and their daughter Bessie married Albert Nussbaumer and made her home in Brooklyn. Their third daughter, Maude, is now Mrs. James Wetsell and resides at the old homestead. Mr. Wetsell is an engineer at the Suffolk sanatorium. Mrs. Bates died about 37 years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Bates were members of the Waverly Baptist Church for more than 50 years, and Mr. Bates was deacon as long as the church services were held. Some time ago the church was sold because of the few members left and the Farmingville Congregational Church was then built. Mr. Bates has managed several farms, the one of W.S. Logan in Selden, G.W. Beck of Bald Hills, the French farm in Selden, where seeds for Peter Henderson & Co. were grown, and the farms of Anthony Marx and George Bussing, Sr., of Holtsville.
