On 21 Oct 1861 David was taken prisoner at The Battle of Ball's Bluff, Leesburg, Virginia, and wounded on the hand.
On 2 Nov 1862 David deserted the 15th Massachusetts. (Note: the timing of this desertion suggests that it may have had something to do with his mother's death.)
On 18 Oct 1863 David was regained to the regiment.
On 22 Jun 1864 David was taken prisoner at Petersburg, Virginia.
He died on 4 Feb 1865 at Florence, Florence County, South Carolina, of disease, as a prisoner of war.
