Michael Burns was born in Ireland to Thomas and Catherine Burns. His year of birth based on calculation from his marriage record listing him as age 20 on 21 Aug 1859 was either 1838 or 1839.

Michael Burns married Mary Ellen Martin on 21 Aug 1859 in Providence , Rhode Island. The marriage record lists the place of birth of each as Ireland, and it is the first marriage for each of them. They were married by Rhode Island Pastor, John Quinn.

Michael is listed as residing in Cranston, Rhode Island, age 20, and occupation is a laborer. His parents names are listed as Thomas and Catherine.

Michael Burns, was mustered in 11 Sep 1862 as a Private in Company F of the 3rd Rhode Island Heavy Artillery. He had just been transferred to Company C when he fell Ill and he died of Typhoid, 17 Jul 1863 in a hospital at Beaufort, South Carolina. He left behind a widow, Mary Ellen (Martin) Burns and two young children.

His son, Thomas Henry, was born 2 Feb 1861 and was only 1 year 7 months old when his father was mustered in and only 2 years 5 months old when his father died.

His daughter, Annie, was born 13 Mar 1863, probably never met her father and was only 4 months and 4 days old when her father died during the Civil War.

Michael is buried at Beaufort National Cemetery in Beaufort, South Carolina. Section 19, Grave Number 1534.

Michael's name is also engraved on the Soldier's and Sailors Monument in Providence Rhode Island which was created to display the names of the more than 1700 soldiers and sailors from Rhode Island who were lost during the Civil War.
