Frederick George Cracknell was my great grandfather. At the time of his birth his parents had not yet married and was therefore registered as Frederick George Jacobs. Although born in Waltham New Town, his family moved to Enfield Lock and latterly northern Enfield, his father dying when he was 16 years old. Fred, his mother and two younger brothers moved to Goat Lane, Forty Hill where he worked as a Groom. He married Jane Chappel on 20 December 1913. Fred enlisted in WWI and served with the East Yorkshire Regiment, 11th Battalion as Private no.39696 and later in the Labour corp. as no.652380. He fought at the Battle of Passchendaele and was a casualty of a mustard gas attack during his time in Flanders, which affected his health significantly. Fred and Jane had six children and after the war the family moved to the Suffolks Estate, Enfield Highway. Fred worked for many years as a public convenience attendant due to to his injuries from the war. Fred died at home at the age of 61.
