Horace was the eldest son of James Cracknell and his first wife Matilda (nee Hudson). At the turn of the 20th century he was working as a furniture removers carman and joined the British Army Gloucestershire regiment on 9 April 1901 as Private no. 6185, serving in South Africa and India. He was discharged from the army in 1913 at the end of his term of service but rejoined in WWI and served in France. He married Norah O'Brien on 30 November 1913 and they subsequently moved to Hackney. They do not appear to have any children. Horace died at his home at Anderson Road, Hackney of lung cancer.
