Mildred S. Alexander, 89, of Taneytown, died peacefully Friday, Oct. 18, 2013, at St. Catherine Nursing Center in Emmitsburg.

Born March 4, 1924, in Howard County, she was the daughter of the late Fulton and Burnice Barnes Slagle. She was the wife of Henry H. Alexander, her husband of 67 years.

She was a teacher with the Carroll County Public School System and taught for her entire career at Taneytown Elementary School until her retirement in 1983.

She was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Taneytown, the Retired Maryland State Teachers Association and the Taneytown Republican Women's Club.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are son Henry H. Alexander Jr. and wife Patricia, of Thurmont; daughters Joan Shry and husband Hobson, of Woodbine, and Carol Horton, of Taneytown; grandchildren Kelly Alexander, Scott Alexander and wife Carrie, Jeremy Shry and wife Shannon, and Kimberly Horton; sisters-in-law Mary Slagle, of Mount Airy, and Blanche Slagle, of Baltimore; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by brothers Fred, Millard and Benjamin Slagle.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 10 a.m. Wednesday until the time of a funeral service, 11 a.m. at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 136 E. Baltimore St., Taneytown, with the Rev. Rachel Semovoski officiating. Interment will follow in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Taneytown.
