John Michael Kuhn, 89, Bismarck, died October 18, 2013, at his Bismarck home under hospice care. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, October 22, at Church of Corpus Christi, Bismarck, with Father Terry Wipf as celebrant. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 12:00 – 6:30 PM on Monday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, with a rosary and remembrances beginning at 6:30 PM. Visitation will continue Tuesday one hour prior to the service at the church. John was born December 31, 1923, at St. Alexius Hospital, Bismarck, and grew up on the family homestead in Dunn County near Halliday, ND. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1945-1946. He moved to Bismarck in 1947 and attended Capital Commercial College. John and Catherine Brown were married February 1, 1949. John was the office manager for Central Bottling from 1949-1958, and served as president of the JCs from 1957-1958. He built homes from 1958-1959 and opened the Arrowhead Shoe Plaza in March 1960. John specialized in fitting problem feet and fitting children's shoes. He "semiretired" in 1985, but continued to work with first, his daughter Judy, and then with his son-in-law, John Tschida and daughter Patty, until the store closed in 1994. John Michael loved people and expressed his love often for his family and friends. He loved fishing for walleye in Canada and in North Dakota, and teaching friends and his grandsons, walleye fishing techniques. John and Catherine enjoyed camping and traveling in their motor home, wintering in Texas for many years. He also enjoyed playing bridge and pinochle and meetings of the "old boys committee" at the Doughnut Hole or McDonalds. John is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Rod and Carla; two daughters and one son-in-law, Jane Yanney, and Patty and John Tschida; six grandsons, Mark, Matthew and Justin Kuhn, Joshua Yanney, and Caleb and Clayten Tschida; one great-granddaughter, Denali; two sisters, Leona Hoff, Richardton, ND, and Sister Judith Kuhn, Yankton, SD; and two sisters-in-law, Rosie Kuhn, Alameda, CA, and Marcella Kuhn, Harvey, ND. John was preceded in death by his parents; by his loving wife of 61 years, Catherine; his brothers, Leo and Ralph; his brother-in-law, Leonard Hoff; his daughter, Judy; and his grandsons, Paul Kuhn and Jonathan Yanney. John's family wishes to express their appreciation and thanks to the caregivers during his last years of life: Robin and Melissa of Extended Life Home Care; Robin and Debby and the caregivers of St. Alexius Home Care; and Tony Brown and Luella Reich of Dakota Travel Nurses; and also a very special thanks for the care and love of Amy Wolf of St. Alexius Hospice and Linda Smith of Dakota Travel Nurses.
