Leona Kuhn was born November 3, 1929 in Halliday, the daughter of Wendelin and Rosina (Heimbuch) Kuhn. She grew up on the family farm near Halliday, attending school at Big Flat School. She later went on to attend school in Richardton; graduating from St. Mary’s High School. It was during this time that she met Leonard Hoff. The couple was united in marriage on May 7, 1949 and made their home on the farm south of Richardton. Together, they farmed and raised their five children. Leona and Leonard operated their dairy farm for 25 years.
Years later, Leona attended school at Assumption College studying Accounting. She then began working for Med Center One Richardton Clinic in 1980. In 1998, her entrepreneurial spirit took over and she started Southwest Hunters Lodge and operated it until 2006. She enjoyed meeting guests that lived in various cities from coast to coast.
Leona was very active in her community and volunteered at St. Mary’s Catholic School. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church; serving as a lector for over 40 years, and the Christian Mothers. Her faith in God was great and humbly served as a Benedictine Oblate of Assumption Abbey, Catholic Daughters, as well as on the Election Board and the Bismarck Diocesan Board for several years. Leona was a member of the Theodore Zech American Legion Auxiliary Post #180; serving as North Dakota State President from 1977-1978 and went on to serve as Divisional National Vice President from 1980-81; Germans from Russia, and a Lady Elk.
Her family was her greatest love and she truly enjoyed spending time with them. She could often be found playing Scrabble or Sudoku and in later years, Words with Friends. Leona enjoyed spending time in her kitchen and was well known for taking Leona’s Best Baked Beans to events. Leona loved sewing, traveling, listening to music and dancing. She was also a Weight Watchers facilitator for over 20 years and an avid exerciser.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Wendelin and Rosina; husband, Leonard; brothers, John, Ralph, and Leo Kuhn; one sister, Sr. Judith Kuhn, OSB; and a granddaughter, Laci Lee Hoff.
