Per the book (p. 267, footnote), "The bodies of Fletcher, Ferguson and Robbins were sent home from Mexico and buried with military honors. Governor French and all the state officials, and many military men of distinction attended the service. The funeral is recorded as the most imposing ever held in the state up to that time. It occurred on the 21st of July, 1847. Rev. Dr. S. Y. McMasters, rector of the Episcopal church, preached the funeral sermon. These four officers of the Alton Volunteer Guards are buried side by side in the Alton cemetery."
