The son of Henry & Maria (Gibson) Bahn, in 1850 he lived with his family in Hellam Township, York County, Pennsylvania, but by 1860, was a farm hand living in West Hempfield Township, Lancaster County. He stood 5' 7" tall and had brown hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Philadelphia February 23, 1864, mustered into federal service there February 29 as a private with Co. F, 186th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company August 15, 1865.
