Isaac Bowman was the son of John and Ann Margaret Sheesley Bowman. He married Frances Phrena Enders who died of childbirth complications shortly after the birth of their son Elwood H. In the Civil War, Isaac served with Co. H, 130th PA Vol. Infantry Regiment, and Co. A, 210th PA Vol. Infantry Regiment. He fought in numerous battles and skirmishes, including the Battle of South Mountain and Antietam (the bloodiest one-day battle of the war), Hatcher's Run, the Bellefield Raid, Destruction of the Weldon Railroad, Dabney's Mills, Gravelly Run and the final skirmish at Appomattox Court House. At the war's end, Isaac marched in the Grand Parade in Washington and was mustered out May 30, 1865, with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. On July 24, 1864, he married Rebecca J. Enders. Only after his return from the war did he first see his daughter, Laura Alice (Mary) Bowman, who had been born March 28, 1865. Another daughter, Bertha B. Bowman, was born in Enders, November 2, 1870.

After the war, Isaac resumed his stone mason trade and left a legacy of hundreds of buildings and bridges as monuments of his manual labor. He was a member of the O.U.A.M. and Knights of Pythias. Upon his death, the following article was in the "Jacksonville Jottings," September 15, 1881, "His record as a soldier is beyond reproach, having performed his numerous duties fearlessly and with fidelity, winning the esteem of his comrades and the approbation of his company and regimental officers!"
