"Tinner" Smith Of Earlier Days In Edina Died In Kansas City At Age 91
W. E. Smith of Kansas City, 91 years old and for a number of years a tinner in Edina, and who was familiarly called "Tinner" Smith, died Monday, Nov. 17, 1952. Death came at the home of his younger daughter, Mrs. John V. Coffey, at 1203 East Forty-second Street, Kansas City.
The rosary was recited at 8 o'clock Tuesday evening at the Thomas E. Quirk Funeral Home in Kansas City, where the body lay in state. Funeral services were held at 9 o'clock yesterday morning at St. James Catholic Church, Kansas City. Burial was yesterday afternoon in the new Catholic Cemetery in Edina beside the grave of Mrs. Smith, who died April 3, 1938.
Surviving Mr. Smith, besides the younger daughter, Mildred, Mrs. Coffey, with whom he lived, are two sons and an older daughter. They are Louis B. Smith of the home; William E. Smith, Jr., 3933 Manheim Road, Kansas City, known as Edgar Smith, when he lived here until a few years ago, and Miss Josephine Smith of 4202 Troost Avenue, Kansas City.
There survive also thirteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
William Edward Smith was born Sept. 6, 1861, in Middletown, Del. He came in early manhood to Edina where he was a tinner for many years at the late Frank M. Miller hardware store and afterward for the late Dan H. Mudd.
Mr. Smith was married here at St. Joseph Church Feb. 6, 1887, by the Rev. John Fitzgerald, pastor, to Miss Nettie Brand. She was born July 24, 1859, in Florissant, Mo., and came, when 10 years old, with her family to Edina, the family traveling on the steamboat, Andrew Johnson, to Canton, and from there to Edina by wagon.
Fifty years after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Smith celebrated their golden wedding on Feb. 6, 1937, at their home in Kansas City, where they had gone from Edina in 1919. They are the parents of five children, those mentioned and a son, Sgt. Donald F. Smith, who was killed in action in the Argonne Forrest Nov. 5, 1918. He enlisted while the family lived in Edina and after the first World War his body was shipped to Edina. It was buried with military honors in the new Catholic Cemetery, the first of the war casualties then to be buried here.
