Mrs Catherine Brooks
Dies At Home of Her Son

Mrs Catherine Brooks, The subject
of this sketch, was born February 24,
1853, and died in the home of her
son Pate Brooks, near Tipple, on
Saturday, January 28, 1933, at the
age of nearly 80 years.
She was married to James R. Brooks
March 14, 1874. to this union were born
13 children, 6 now living and 7 dead;
the living children are: Roy Brooks,
a carpenter, Rockview; Pate Brooks,
and Crockett R. Brooks, farmers, Tipple;
W. Powell Brooks and Carroll Brooks,
Teachers, Jesse; the only living daughter
Susie, the wife of Supervisor Gordon
B. McGraw, Mullens.
There are 24 living grand children
and 4 great grand children.
Her husband J.R. Brooks, died
December 14, 1930. She lived a consistent
Christian life for more than sixty
years. She was perhaps a charter member
of the Pine Grove Baptist Church
which was organized by Rev. J. L. Marshall
in 1869.
She was a daughter of Zur Acord and
Sarah (Oliver) Acord, and was therefore
a grand daughter of old Jack Acord, who
died at the age of about 104 years, and
a great grand daughter of John Acord
the pioneer settler, who settled at the
mouth of Acord Branch above Jesse, When
this was Logan county. Her husband the
late James R. Brooks, Esq., was a son of
William Randolph Brooks, and a grandson of
William Brooks, who taught the first
school of any character in this county
about the year 1824. His great grandfather
old Richard Brooks, was living with his son
Wm. Brooks, at the mouth of Craney on
Clear Fork, when Wyoming county was
organized in 1850, and taught the first
subscription school in the new county
the following winter at $12.50 per month.
Mrs. Brooks leaves three sisters, Mrs.
Mary Polk, Tipple; Mrs. A.L.Brooks, Mullens,
and Mrs. W.R. Shumate, Saulsville; and two
brothers, Robt. D. Acord and Henderson Acord,
who live in Raleigh county.
The funeral services were conducted by
the writer, in the Pine Grove Baptist
Church on Monday, the 30th and the body
laid to rest beside those of her husband
and children in the Pine Grove cemetery
near by. To the children and many
relatives we extend our heartfelt
sympathies:
