The town is named for John & Mahala (Cozort) McGraw who settled their family here in 1852. It was first named Milam after Andrew Milam who is believed to be the first settler to the area.

It has also been known as McGraw Mills and Tipple. John was a farmer and businessman who was also the town's first postmaster.
