Erhardt H. Free, age 87, a resident of Shady Lane Nursing Care Center, Manitowoc, entered eternal life Thursday morning, September 13, 2012 at the care center.

Erhardt was born on October 6, 1924 in the town of Newton, Manitowoc County. He was the son of the late George and Emma Hecker Free. Erhardt attended Trinity Lutheran School in the town of Liberty. He entered the United States Army and served overseas in the Philippines as a Military Police Sergeant. After his honorable discharge Erhardt returned home and went to carpenter apprentice training school. He then became employed with various local construction companies retiring from Burge Boat Company in 1983.

On May 20, 1967 Erhardt married Elaine Vreeke at First Lutheran Church Chapel in Manitowoc. Erhardt was a long time member of First Lutheran Church and served as a volunteer with the Manitowoc County Sheriff's Department.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years: Elaine; one daughter and son-in-law: Julie and Mike Donahue, Manitowoc, WI; three step children: Barbara Grandoe, Milwaukee, WI; Richard (Sheryl) Vreeke, Lynden, WA; Jeanie Kealey, Austin, TX; five step grandchildren and seven step great grandchildren; one brother-in-law: Henry Carmody, Manitowoc, WI; one sister-in-law: Helen Free, Manitowoc, WI; nieces, nephews along with other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents: George and Emma Free; two brothers: Erwin and his wife Margaret Free; Harold Free; one sister: Evelyn Carmody; one grandson: Travis Rauen.

Memorial services will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 17, 2012 at First Lutheran Church Chapel, 521 North 8th Street, Manitowoc. Officiating will be Rev. Roald Harswick with burial to follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc. Cremation will have taken place at the Harrigan Parkside Crematory and Chapel. Following the graveside services there will be a luncheon at the Harrigan Parkside Gathering Center located on the south property of the funeral home. Relatives and friends may call at First Lutheran Church Chapel on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m.
