James Codwise was born in 1772 in New York City, New York. His parents were George Codwise and Maria Van Ranst. He married Rebecca Rogers (daughter of John and Agnes Rogers of the Mt. Pleasant Plantation in St. Croix). They were married on November 25, 1797 at Nicholas Cruger's house. The officiant was Rev. Benjamin Moore of the Trinity Church in Manhattan. James and Rebecca had eight known children named Agnes Maria (Mrs. David Burlock), George Washington, Caroline Matilda, Cornelia de Conick, David Osborne, John Rogers, Anna M., and Elizabeth R.. James was the U.S. Vice Consul in Frederiksted, and Captain a la Suite of the Royal Danish Army. He also ran his wife's family's sugar plantation called Mt. Victory (originally Mt. Pleasant) and a boarding house. James died on April 20, 1861 in St. Croix. The burial took place at the Anglican Church's cemetery in Frederiksted.
