KILLED BY FALL DOWN STAIRWAY, Aged Mrs. Simeon Hosmer's Neck Broken, Causing Instant Death
Mrs. Sarah D. Hosmer, an aged resident of Batavia, met sudden death at the home of her son, George E. Dorman of the Batavia-Elba Townline road, at 11:35 o'clock yesterday morning. While descending stairs leading from the kitchen to the cellar, she fell to the bottom, striking her head on a cement platform raised a foot from the cellar floor and breaking her neck. Death was instantaneous.
Mrs. Hosmer, in spite of her eighty years, was very active and attended to household duties daily. At the time she met her fatal accident she had a dishpan in her hand and the noise made by the fall roused the rest of the household. Mrs. Dorman ran to her and found that she was dead. Dr. Gray of Batavia was summoned and he in turn notified Coroner Drew (?), who went to the house and after learning the circumstances issued a certificate of accidental death.
Mrs. Hosmer was born in Batavia on June 1, 1830, and spent the greater portion of her life in this town, although for a time she resided in Buffalo. Her maiden name was Churchill and she was twice married. Her first husband was Amasa Dorman and her second Simeon Hosmer, who died 17 years ago. She was a member of the East Elba M.E. church.
Besides her son, Mr. Dorman of the Maple Lawn farm, she is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Libbie Adams of Scottsville, MIch., Mrs. Ellen Walker of Alger, Mich., and Mrs. Ottis Elliott of Jackson, Mich; a granddaughter, Mrs. George W. Searles of Lyndonville, and a great-grandchild.
The funeral will be held from Mr. Dorman's house on Wednesday afternoon at 1 o'clock and the burial will be at Daws.
