Mattie was the daughter of Farris and Leah L Hunt Bennett.

Family states she was from Finley, Taylor Co, Kentucky. Her son's (William Edward) death certificate states her birthplace as Finley, Taylor Co, Kentucky.

Mattie married John Ed Arvin on February 16, 1919 in Willowtown, Taylor Co, Kentucky.

Their children: Dorothy Mae Cooper (1920-1993); William Edward 'Billie' Arvin (1922-1922); Opal Arvin (1924/25-1944); Ilene Davis (1930-1989); John Lee Arvin (1933-1993); Ronald Winford 'Ronnie' Arvin (1936-1938) and Carolyn Deanna Arvin.

John, Mattie and Dorothy moved from Taylor Co, Kentucky to Indianapolis, Indiana about 1923/24.

Their next child, Opal, was born in Indianapolis in 1924/25 followed by Ilene, John Lee, Ronald Winford and Carolyn Deanna.

Their daughter, Dorothy Mae, married Winiford James 'Winnie' Cooper on March 30, 1935 in Indianapolis, Indiana. They had a daughter. Janice Mae, who was born 7 months before her aunt, Carolyn.

About 1940 John left the family. He is still listed on the census with the family in April of 1940. Eventually went to live in Buffalo, Indiana. He would visit the children from time to time.

Their daughter Opal had epilepsy. Opal had a daughter, Phyllis Anne Arvin. Opal died in 1944 when Phyllis was just a toddler and Mattie raised Phyllis. Phyllis was considered her daughter and Phyllis' cousins called her 'Aunt'.

Mattie went to work when her youngest daughter, Carolyn, started to school - about 1944.

John remarried on January 27, 1949 to Daisy Mae Hartley (maiden name).

In the fall of 1949 Mattie became ill with cancer. She died the next July. The children: John, Carolyn and Phyllis went to Buffalo, Indiana to live with their father and step mother, Daisy. Their father owned and operated an inn and restaurant there.

Mattie was loving and never self seeking. She worked hard just to make ends meet. She was a soft spoken woman who never complained; a really special lady with a lot of compassion for others.
