15th Earl of Devon. Son and heir of William Stafford of Hook, Dorset, and Southwick in North Bradley, Wiltshire, by Katherine Chidiock. He was knighted by Edward IV on Towton Field, Mar. 29, 1461, and served as High Steward of Cornwall and Constable of Bristol in the same year. He was summoned to Parliament from 1461 to 1463 as 'Humfrido Stafford de Suthwyk, Ch'r', and was created Baron Stafford of Southwick by patents dated Apr. 24, 1464. On May 17, 1469 he was created Earl of Devon, one of the forfeited honors of the attainted Thomas Courtenay (1432-1461). After being sent to suppress a rebellion in the North, he deserted the royal cause, prompting the king to command the sheriffs of Somerset and Dorset to put him to death. He was beheaded at Bridgwater, having been an Earl only a matter of months.
