Purser Rijk Baron was sadly the only casualty from among the 1152 crew and passengers of the S.S. Volendam when she was torpedoed by a German U-boat of Northern Ireland on the night of 30th August 1940. After being holed and taking on water the captain ordered the ship to be abandoned. Purser Baron was struck by a swinging pulley and fell into the sea unconscious. His body was found washed up on the small island of Gunna by Tiree some weeks later and he was buried on Tiree.
