BLOOMINGTON - Kenneth E. Auxier, 79, of Bloomington, died Friday (June 13, 2008) at the home he shared with his companion, Edith.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at Christ Lutheran Church in Normal. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with Pastor Philip Kaufmann officiating. Cremation rites will be accorded, with burial of ashes at a later date.

Memorials may be made to Christ Lutheran Church. Kibler-Smith Memorial Home is in charge of arrangements.

Kenneth was born June 19, 1928 in Melcher, Iowa, a son of Albert Auxier and Della Hunderdose Auxier. He grew up in Iowa and joined the United States Coast Guard in 1950. While stationed in Nena, Wis., he met his wife, Barbara Rassmussen. They were married Sept. 15, 1951, and she preceded him in death on Feb. 2, 1997.

Kenneth was later stationed in Chicago as a recruiter and spent many years living in Arlington Heights. He owned and operated a successful business, "Ken's Painting & Decorating," while in Arlington Heights.

He was a talented banjo player and played with some bands, performing at parties and a variety of places and occasions. He also loved to play pool and won many trophies doing so.

In the early 90s, Kenneth and his wife Barbara came to Bloomington, where he has resided since. After Barbara died, he later met Edith Winstead and they became close friends and loving companions for the last 11 years.

He is survived by three children, Mike (Jennifer) Auxier of Bloomington; Pat (Ed) Hedge of Crystal Lake; and Cindy (Bart) Surmin of Inverness; seven grandchildren, Michelle and Kimberly Auxier; Amanda, Shane and Kyle Hedge; and Brad and Kevin Surmin; his loving companion, Edith Winstead, Bloomington; a sister, Donna Mae Petersen of Okla.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Barbara, three sisters and one brother
