Raymond J. Fries was born 1876 in Trenton, Mercer County, NJ, the eldest of 2 known surviving children born to Louis K. Freese (1852-1922) and his wife, Julia Smith Ashmore (ca. 1850-1945) of Trenton. His father changed the spelling of the family surname to FRIES in about 1880. Raymond's sister, Helen Ashmore Fries (ca. 1877-aft 1948), never married and lived her entire life first with her parents (who separated), then with her mother and brother.

Raymond grew up in New York City where the family had removed from Trenton in about 1879 where his father became active in NYC real estate. Later, the family removed to New Rochelle where Raymond graduated High School.

In 1897, 21-year old Raymond married 22-year old Nellie B. McDonald of Manhattan, a third-generation Irish American, daughter of teamster/ice delivery man, Thomas McDonald (ca. 1845) and Mary Markham (ca. 1847). The couple would become parents one child, Donald Ashmore Fries (1898-1964).

By 1900 the couple had removed to Jersey City, Hudson Co, NJ where Raymond was operating a buff & felt manufacturing company. By this time, Nellie's parents had died, and her 3 surviving brothers Thomas, Edward, and Daniel McDonald moved in with them.

After being involved in several more start up companies in the industry, Raymond Fries joined DAVOL RUBBER COMPANY (ca. 1910) as Sales Manager in their New York office, later transferring to their headquarters in Providence, Rhode Island where he remained for his entire career as Advertising & Sales Manager for this global corporation.

Sometime after 1920, Raymond and Nellie separated (and were subsequently divorced), and on September 12, 1931, the then 55-year old married (2nd) to 32-year old spinster, Grace F. McCarron (1899-1983), daughter of Edward Frances McCarron & Nellie Ellen Goodwin of Providence. The couple resided in Cranston with his mother and sister until his death.

Raymond J. Fries died in 1944 at age 68. His second wife survived him 39 years, passing in 1983 at age 84.
