Julia Smith Ashmore was born June 17, 1850 in Trenton, NJ, the 5th of 8 known surviving children (2 boys/6 girls), born to Capt. Harry J. Ashmore and Catharine L. Smith. Julia is descended from two proud and early settler families in Mercer County -- the Ashmores and Smiths, and her family was well-known after generations of living in Trenton, NJ.

Her paternal grandfather, father, and uncles, all made their living as commercial seaman. For many years her father operated merchant vessels between Trenton and Philadelphia on the Delaware River and the Delaware & Raritan (D&R) Canal with the Merchants Transportation Company and also captained schooners between Trenton and New York City. In later years he was Collector of Customs at the Port of Trenton, a very important position in the city.

On her mother's side, her grandfather, John E. Smith, died young; but her maternal grandmother, Eliza Lalor Smith, a descendant of Barnt DeKlyn of Trenton, was ever-present in her life, having lived in her parent's household until she died in 1870. Julia's maternal uncle was Lt. Commander Watson S. Smith (1825-1864), an Annapolis graduate who served in the Mexican War, the Civil War, and accompanied Capt. H. J. Harstene on the Artic polar expedition in 1855. Her maternal aunt was Elizabeth Smith Mott (1822-1895), wife of Gen. Gershom Mott (1822-1884) a hero of the Civil War and civil leader in Trenton; and her aunt, Julia Smith, married wealthy and influential farmer, George Anderson Hutchinson, whose son, Dr. Henry Ashmore Hutchinson was superintendent of Dixmont Mental Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA

On November 18, 1874, 24-year old Julia married 22-year old Louis K. FREESE, the youngest son of Col. Jacob R. Freese (1826-1885) and Lydia D. Swayze (1827-1872), a prominent citizen of Trenton, who was a personal friend of President Abraham Lincoln and former Lt. Colonel of the NJ State Militia in 1859, a medical doctor, newspaper editor, banker, and one of the richest men in Trenton. The Ashmore's were prominent in the city for their lineage. The Freese's, on the other hand, were newcomers to the city, having left their home in Hope, Warren County, NJ some years back, and returning east after making their fortune in Illinois.

Louis was a recent graduate of Cornell and the young couple set up housekeeping in Trenton where Louie had his hand in several of his father's business enterprises, including the State Savings Bank of Trenton where he held the title of Treasurer. Their only two surviving children were born in Trenton in quick succession -- Raymond J. (1876) and Helen Ashmore (1877).

In January of 1878 the Freese family was rocked by a scandal and Louis, his older brother Harry, and his father were all arrested on charges of embezzlement of investor funds from the State Savings Bank. Louie would end up serving 6 months in county jail for the charges. After Louie's release, the couple left Trenton and her husband changed the spelling of his surname to FRIES, which is the original spelling of the name when his first ancestor came to this country in 1728.

Julia, Louie, and their two children, moved to New York City, when it was just beginning to become the sprawling city known today. Louie would pursue a career as a small investor and NY realtor, but eventually settled he lovely town of New Rochelle in Westchester County, NY .

Julia and her husband separated after 1900, with her husband moving into Manhattan, NY while Julia and her daughter remained in New Rochelle until about 1930 when they moved in with her son Raymond in Cranston, Rhode Island.

Julia would outlive her husband and her son Raymond, and died in Cranston at age 95.
