Catherine L. Smith was born about 1813 in Pennsylvania, daughter of John E. Smith and Elizabeth "Eliza" Watson. The Smith family were large land owners in the Trenton & Lawrenceville area, and this branch of were early settlers in Lamberton, which now forms a section of the southern part of Trenton.

Catherine's siblings included:

* Julia R. Smith (1819-1904) who was (2nd) wife of George Anderson Hutchinson.

* Elizabeth Smith (1822-1895) who married Gen. Gershom Mott.

* Lt. Cmdr. Watson S. Smith (1825-1864) who married Mary Wilson Kingman and served in the Mexican War and Civil War, and was part of the 1855 polar expedition set out to find what happened to Sr. John Franklin.

Kate married boat captain Henry "Harry" J. Ashmore on January 11, 1841 and became mother to 8 known surviving children:

* Emma L. Ashmore (1841-aft 1922)
* Watson Smith Ashmore (1843-1911)
* Ann/Annie M. Ashmore (1852-aft 1900)
* Julia Smith Ashmore FRIES (1853 - 1945)
* Elizabeth "Lizzie" M. Ashmore (1857-1874)
* Frederick Ashmore (c. 1846)
* Kate L. Ashmore (d. 1846)
* Virginia Voorhees Ashmore ARMSTRONG (1848-1939)

Kate was widowed in 1878 when her husband of 37 years died at age 72. She would survive him another 23 years, passing in 1901 at about age 88.

Her only surviving son, Watson Smith Ashmore, never married and the Ashmore name for this line died out with his death in 1911. Three of his daughters married; but only two had surviving children.

Daughter, Julia Ashmore, married prominent Trentonian Louis K. Fries, had children, and passed the Ashmore name to her children; and they passed the name through to their children, and so the line of Harry J. Ashmore lives on today in the FRIES descendants.
