He was named in honor of his uncle Lt. Cmdr. Watson S. Smith who died in 1864.
The Henry Ashmore home, which Watson remained in until his death, was located at 225 East Hanover, between Stockton and Montgomery Streets; and today is just an empty lot owned by the city of Trenton.
From an early age, Watson was involved in the sea transport business populated by many in the Ashmore family including his father and uncle, Capt. William Ashmore. After his father's death in 1878, Watson took over his father's position as agent for the Merchants Transport Company where he remained until his death in 1911.
Watson was the only surviving son, as his only brother Frederick Ashmore died in 1856. Watson never married and this line of Ashmore's was carried on only through Henry's married daughters.
