NOTE: Harry Ashmore was originally buried in Mercer Cemetery (Memorial #114888191) , as were 2 of his infant children --Freddie & Kate L. Ashmore. It is not known if his remains were re-interred here when his wife died in 1901, or not. All that is known for sure is the Ashmore monument in Greenwood bears his name and those of the 2 children buried in Mercer Cemetery.

Henry "Harry" J. Ashmore was born 1806 in Lamberton, now part of Trenton, Mercer Co, NJ, the 7th of 10 known surviving children born to John Ashmore (ca. 1774-1851) and his wife, Jane Swangle. His mother's name has also been found in records as "Jinnie" and surname also found as Swangley or Swangler. Henry was the paternal grandson of Thomas Ashmore (1747-1827).

The Ashmore's were early settlers to Trenton and are believed to be descended from Anthony Ashmore (ca. 1641-1698) of England, who came to New Jersey as an indentured servant of Thomas Warne and later settled in Cranbury Brook, NJ.

This branch of the Ashmores lived in Lamberton during the Colonial Period. Lamberton is located on the Delaware River, which was a port community in what is now South Trenton. Ashmore Avenue in Trenton is named for the Ashmore family, whose members were prominent in the early life of Lamberton (now the Sixth Ward), and were long identified with transportation on the Delaware.

Harry and and his 4 brothers were all boat captains, which included: Capt. Thomas Ashmore (1795-1854), who lived in New Brunswick, and drowned at sea in 1859 at age 64 with his son John; Capt. John Ashmore Jr. (ca. 1798-1872); Capt. William Ashmore (1804-1889) and Capt. David Snowden Ashmore (1812-1869), who were all ships captains out of the busy Trenton Port which was a hub for huge volumes of freight that were shipped out of the Delaware River and Delaware & Raritan Canal. At this time, freight was brought to Trenton by sloops and steamboats and were transferred to heavy wagons that hauled the goods to New Brunswick, where it was placed on ships to be carried to New York. Some of the goods were temporarily stored in the many warehouses along the river.

Harry was 35 years old when he married on January 11, 1841 to Catherine "Kate" Smith, from a prominent Pennsylvania family, then living Trenton. The couple would become parents to 8 known surviving children:

* Emma L. Ashmore (1841-aft 1922)
* Watson Smith Ashmore (1843-1911)
* Ann/Annie M. Ashmore (1852-aft 1900)
* Julia Smith Ashmore FRIES (1853 - 1945)
* Elizabeth "Lizzie" M. Ashmore (1857-1874)
* Frederick Ashmore (c. 1846)
* Kate L. Ashmore (d. 1846)
* Virginia Voorhees Ashmore ARMSTRONG (1848-1939)

Harry would later serve as Collector of Customs at the port (a position his brother William also held); and by 1860, Harry had become freight agent for Merchants Transport Company whose steamships moved goods in and out of Philadelphia & Trenton to New York. He would also serve as Quartermaster for Mercer Co. Militia.

Capt. Henry J. Ashmore died in 1878 at age 72. His wife of 37 years would survive him 23 years, passing in 1901.

Harry's only surviving son, Watson Smith Ashmore, never married and the Ashmore name for this line died out with his death in 1911. Three of his daughters married; but only two had surviving children.

Daughter, Julia Ashmore, married prominent Trentonian Louis K. Fries, had children, and passed the Ashmore name to her children; and they passed the name through to their children, and so the line of Harry J. Ashmore lives on today in the FRIES descendants.
