Hayes U. Dorey, 82 of Island Route, whose name has been synonymous with "fine tobacco" in Clinton County for half a century, died at 4:50 a. m. in the Lock Haven Hospital
The island farmer has been ill for several years, suffering from a heart ailment. Saturday, while sitting on the swing at his home he suffered another heart attack. He was taken to the hospital by ambulance, and died there early today.
Hayes Dorey's most cherished trophy was one he earned three years in a row—1922, '23 and '24—the Clinton County cub of the Pennsylvania Tobacco Growers Association "to encourage production of better Havana wrapper tobacco.
In 1928 he took the Clinton County Tobacco Growers cup, just one of the many other honors that came to him for his superb tobacco crops, grown in the rich soil of his farm in the center of Great Island.
In his former years, when what is now Route 220 traversed Great Island, crossing the two bridges below Lock Haven, motorists could not fail to see and admire the Dorey tobacco as they passed Hayes' front door.
He was born in that house, son of Richard H and Virginia Baird Dorey, and lived there all his life. Farming was the center of his interest.
His wife. Kathryn Probst Dorey; a sister, Mrs. Tabailha Jones of Jersey Shore; several nieces and nephews survive him. He was a member of the Methodist Church.
The Doreys were married in Swissdale in 1901. and had celebrated their golden wedding day in 1951.
DOREY — Services for Hayes U. Dorey, 82, of Island Route, who died Monday, May 25, 1959, at 4.50 a. in. in (lie Lock Haven Hospital, will be held Thursday at 2 p. m. at the Yost Funeral Home. The Rev. Daniel S Robinson will officiate. Interment, Dunnstown Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 p. in Tuesday.
