age 65, Information has been suggested to add to Joseph Shepard, The Shepard families of New England, Vol 3, pages 255-256, NH21, Capt Jospeh Shepard, son of John Shepard NH#3, born probably in Barrington, NH about 1745, died at Holderness, NH in 1814, ( gravestone in the lot of his grandson at Holderness gives his date of death as 13 March, 1810, aged 65, but the year date is certainly wrong); married Esther Cox, born about 1746, and died 6 Feb 1830, aged 84 (gravestone Holderness) daughter of William and Esther____ Cox. On Oct 1, 1766 Joseph Shepard of Canterbury NH, sold to John Gipson one whole share (100 acres) in the township of Holderness [NH Land]. He was on the tax list in Canterbury, 1767, but on 24 Jan 1774 participated in the second division of land in Holderness. He settled there and was listed at New Holderness in the 1790 Census with a household of two males over 16 years,2 males over 16 & 3 males under 16 and 3 females. The will of William Cox, blacksmith, in 1783 named with others his wife Esther and daughter Esther Shepard. Lt. Joseph Sheppard was named in a payroll of a company of militia commanded by Lt. Col. David Webster which marched to reinforce Fort Ticonderoga in July 1777. [NH Rev. War Rolls] On Oct 1, 1810 a petition to have a guardian appointed for Joseph Shepard, incompetent to care for his property or family, was signed by John & William, Shepard, James Sawyer and Arthur L Cox; this was addressed to the Selectmen of Holderness, and having been endorsed by the Selectmen, the Court on 3 Nov 1810 appointed John Shepard of New Holderness guardian. On 5 July 1814, John Shepard Jr., of New Holderness was appointed administrator of the estate of Joseph Shepard who died intestate. An account shows payments made to Charles Shepard and Richard Shepard Jr. also to the administrator for "balance due me on settlement of my guardian accounts against him when deranged." [Grafton County Probate} There is a Shepard Hill in Holderness going out of town toward the West of Rt. 3 after the bridge between Little and Big Squam.
