(*Christening dates)

John Michie was born at Marr, Insch Parish, Aberdeenshire and christened 22 December 1685. Presumably he was born earlier that month. John became a merchant of some prominence in the Royal Burgh of Banff, a major commercial center. He was active in the Banff Guild organization. According to various old parish records on Scotlands people he is identified first as the Town Thefauer (clerk) and Dean of the Guild, a magisterial position below the post of Provost.

There is a stone set in the wall of short narrow gated close at 1 Strait Path, Banff, that has both their names inscribed on it. (See photo to the left.) Strait Path links the two main retail centers in the Old Town. This may have been their residence.
