Jan. 20 1840, born in Whitby Canada. He was listed as a lumberman prior to the war. Enlisted in the 12th cavalry at age 22, August 30,1862. His regiment trained on Staten Island. November 19,1862, he mustered in as a private, Co. B with the 12th cav. to serve three years.April 23 he was appointed sergeant. He was detached from his regiment from May 1863 to November 1963 for recruitment purposes in New York. Jan.8 1864 He was commissiond second lieutenant with a rank from Nov. 63.February 20 1864 Mustered in as second lieutenant, Co. F, 12th NY Cavalry.April 17 Russell was severely wounded by a gunshot which passed through his left lower belly,and exiting pelvis approx. three inches from his spine. This happened during the initial phase of the fighting around Plymouth, N.C..The lieutenant managed to stay on his horse and avoided capture.
In the summer of 64 he recuperated from the wound at Foster General Hospital in New Berne N.C. On October 31, he was commissioned first lieutenant. December 21, 1865 Russell married Elizabeth Moran. They lived for a time on Staten Island. The couple had three sons,Robert, William, and Dudley, and one daughter, Cora. Mr. Russell suffered from his wound till the end of his life. After the war he worked as a provisions dealer, a hotel keeper, and finally a dentist.
He is interred at Calvary Cemetery (section 11)range 1, plot G, Grave 15 in Woodside, Queens, New York.
