Born in Baumbach, Germany. His parents were Johann Klauer and Anna Margaretha Krumeich. His mother died in Germany and father remarried Anna Maria Steuder. He arrived with his family in 1854 and settled in Dubuque, Iowa. He moved to Wisconsin at some point and enlisted in the Civil war at LaCrosse, Wisconsin. He was a member of the 38th Infantry, Company F from Wisconsin.
