Musician. Born Joseph Richard Dodd Jr, he was best-known as being lead singer and drummer with the group "The Standells" on the hit single, "Dirty Water" (1966). He began his career at age 9 in 1955, when he became a drummer replacement Mouseketeer on the new Walt Disney TV series "Mickey Mouse Club". He only stayed with the show part of a season, but went on to work the "Big Top at Disneyland" with other Mouseketeers before leaving Disney Studios. He kept up with his drumming, playing with local garage bands such as "Eddie and the Showmen", plus "The Belairs", which recorded and released the first hit surf song "Mr. Moto" (1961). After he left "The Belairs", he had a brief acting career appearing in the films "Bye Bye Birdie" (1962) and "Get Yourself a College Girl" (1964). In the spring of 1964, he joined "The Standells" a house band from PJ's Club on the Sunset Strip which was signed to Liberty Records and released the album, "The Standells In Person At P.J.'s". The band became popular, performing on quite a few mid-1960s television shows including "Shindig", "Ben Casey", "The Munsters" and "The Bing Crosby Show". In early 1966, after recording "Dirty Water", Dodd left "The Standells" to be a member of "The Buffalo Springfield" but returned to "The Standells" several months later when "Dirty Water" became a Billboard top ten hit. He left the Standells in 1968, to record the solo album "First Evolution", but found his music couldn't compete with the new styles of the time. In his later years, he managed a restaurant, worked for a construction equipment company in Los Angeles and appeared with thirty other Mouseketeers on the 25th Anniversary TV special in 1980. The song "Dirty Water" became the Boston Red Sox's official theme song in 1997 and is listed in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's "500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll." Dodd passed away from cancer at age 68.
