Eldest child of Thomas Louis Gilmore (1819-1890) and Elizabeth Agnes Gilmore (1828-1904).

Husband of Charlotte Morgan (1853-1884), married December 19, 1876. John was the son-in-law of Judge Philip Hickey Morgan.

Lawyer in his father's firm with his two brothers Joseph Clohecy Gilmore and Samuel Louis Gilmore in the firm. In 1876, John was elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives from third ward. He was the former attorney for Charity Hospital, and at the time of his death, was the Vice President of Chess, Checkers & Whist Club.

John had been living with his parents since the death five years earlier of his wife, Charlotte Morgan. He had three children who also were living with him and his parents. His other daughter, Bessie, pre-deceased him in the previous year. Their Camp Street Home is now the Lighthouse for the Blind.
