LOCAL YOUTH DIES AFTER GUN ACCIDENT - James Christian, Jr. Victim of Companion's
'Unloaded Gun'
James H. Christian, Jr., 16, of Orland died early yesterday morning at a hospital at
Chico, despite valiant efforts of physicians and a blood transfusion from his father
intended to save his life after a gun accident Saturday. Funeral services for young
Christian will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Sweet mortuary chapel
here, with Rev. A. G. Mc Vay officiating. Interment will be in the Masonic Cemetery.
The biceps muscle of Christian's right arm was ripped and his right chest was torn,
causing collapse of the right lung, when a 20-gauge shotgun in the hands of a youthful
companion was accidentally discharged at close range. The gun was supposed to be
unloaded.
The accident occurred at 8 a. m. Saturday while the victim, his brother, Robert
Christian and two companions, Henry Fisk and John Cavier both of Willows, were walking
from a turkey camp in the Christian ranch north of Orland, where they had spent the
night, to the Christian home for breakfast.
Weakened by loss of blood from the huge wound in his arm and side, young Christian was
rushed to Orland where dressings were applied and a saline injection administered by Dr.
T. H. Brown. The youth was then taken to the Enloe hospital for treatment. His condition
was described as "very critical" when he was received at the hospital, and
other efforts to save him from the effects of shock and loss of blood _ of no avail.
Surviving him are the parents, Mr. and Mrs. James H. Christian, well known Orland
residents, and the sorrowing brothers and sisters: Mrs. Elsie Fisk of Willows, Mrs. Vera
Berlinger, Mrs. Evelyn Lavey, Miss Geraldine, Donna and Reynardine and Robert and Maurice
Christian, of Orland. - Transcribed by E.
