James Blackshear is the son of Alexander Blackshear and Agnes Stout. He was born at the Blackshear Farm at Little Creek Hundred, Delaware. (Later Kent Co)

Alexander and Agnes sold 100 acres in 1740 which were given to Alexander by his father, Robert Blackshear. Possibly this coincided with his father's death and they then moved their young family south, to North Carolina. They are first found in NC records in 1747 when Alexander witnessed John Fellyan's will in Craven Co. The next year, 1748, Alexander received a warrant for 100 acres on Rattlesnake branch above the Tuckahoe River. (Now Tuckahoe Creek and in Jones Co)

Their son James' first record (Blacksheariana p 174) is a May Term 1753 deed for a different 100 acres on the south side of the Tuckahoe River. This land may be very close to that of his father's. James would be at least 21 yrs at the time of this 1753 acquisition, putting his birth c1731 or 1732. (earlier, if he were older than 21)

In 1760, shortly after his marriage, James purchased 160 acres from John Martin Franck, and sold the Tuckahoe land. (James' various legal dealings from 1753 through his 1788 will can be found in "Blacksheariana" p 173-182)

About 1758 he married Catherine Franck Bush, widow of Hardy Bush, and daughter of John Martin Franck and Civil/Sevil Mueller. John Martin Franck was an early settler of New Bern as part of the De Graffenried settlement.

James and Catherine had the following children:

James 1759-1782 - Killed by Tories*
Edward m. Emily Goodwin Mitchell
David m. Frances "Fanny" Hamilton
Elizabeth m. Blake Bryan
Susanna m. Edward Bryan
Elijah (appears to have children - unknown wife)
Penelope m. Edward Bryan (a cousin to Edw. above)
Joseph m. Winifred Tennille

The will of James Blackshear was made on 6 Feb 1788, witnessed and signed by him on 2 April 1788, and proved during the Dec term, 1788. (His death would have occurred between April and Dec) Named in the will are sons Edward, David, Elijah and Joseph (both under 21 yrs) and daughters Betsy Bryan, Susanna Bryan and Penelope (she is probably under 21 yrs). [Condensed biography by Robyn Adair]

Email me if you would like a copy of the transcription of the will. James Blackshear is my 4-Greats Grandfather.

*By proclamation of the Governor and Resolution of the House: Rice Bass, John Bass, Harrison Bass, William Roberts, Thomas Dean, Jr and Daniel Miller were wanted for the murder of Martin Franck and James Blackshear.
